How do I tan? What are the steps?

There are tanning guides at more than a few sites, so I'll just link a couple:

How long does it take a pelt/skin/hide to cure?

It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes of RL time per piece of the item. You don't have to be in game for the time to run, and they can be sitting in your vault and still cure. You must LOOK at the item after the time has elapsed; otherwise it will stay 'curing' forever. See the table below for curing times:

Pieces Time to cure
1 1 hour 40 minutes
2 3 hours 20 minutes
3 5 hours
4 6 hours 40 minutes
5 8 hours 20 minutes

What are the stitch messages and how badly did I just screw up?

Listed from best to worst:

Can I erase a pattern I've already put on a skin?

Yes. RUB the skin and you will remove the pattern marked on it.

Why can't I make a perfect such and such? I didn't screw up on any of the steps.

If you're making a non-armor item, the best possible description is superb (well-made if you use a non-arranged pelt). For armor items, it may be that non-rangers have a much harder time making 'perfect' items, even if they don't mess up on any of the steps.

My item came out with no quality description or an extra space. What gives?

Sometimes items will come out buggy. It seems to happen to me most often when using small pelts to make big items (ie 10 frog skins to make a set of leathers). You can assist to have the space removed if you really want. Some items, like the archer's bracer, never get a quality description (ex: an archer's snowbeast-pelt bracer).

What's the best armor to wear?

It depends on what you want out of your leather. Weight vs. protection vs. hinderance? Vision has a growing list of perfectly made armor and their stats, so I suggest you look there and compare. My current list is horribly underpopulated. :)

How do the different skins and hides compare to one another in terms of toughness, rigidity, and thickness?

Tarragon posted a list on 9/22/06 that listed all of the hides sorted by toughness, rigidity, and thickness. I've recreated that list here. The lists are sorted from most to least. It's also direct from Tarragon's post...I removed a couple errors, but there may still be some.
